Candidates are expected to attend each of the following PD opportunities. Each session will be facilitated by district personnel. The following outlines are the basis only of the presentations; new material may be added at time of presentation.
Session 1: Overview of the Leadership Development Program
The prospective leader will:- become familiar with the Leadership at Work Program
- become familiar with leadership roles within the District
- develop an understanding of leadership theory and leadership styles
- become familiar with leadership trends in the school district
- develop a network of support with colleagues
- develop an understanding of the administrative needs of the district
- develop and understanding of the value of research and reading in developing a personal vision of leadership
Session 2: Professional Appraisal and Personal Growth for Educators
The prospective leader will:- develop an understanding of professional growth in the educational milieu.
- develop and understanding of SMART goals.
- develop an understanding of Growth Plans.
- develop the ability to analyze teacher growth plans .
- understand the legal requirement for employee appraisal.
- develop strategies to address timelines associated with professional and non professional appraisal.
- develop an understanding of classroom walkthrough practices.
- develop an understanding of the relationship between personal/professional growth, school growth and development and the district strategic directions.
Session 3: Instructional Leadership and School Development
The prospective leader will:- develop an understanding of the link between the strategic objectives of the district and school growth and development
- develop an understanding of the link between school growth and development and student learning.
- understand the nature and importance of leadership for learning
- develop an understanding of the leader as an instructional leader.
- develop an understanding of the roles and responsibilities of teachers, parents and students in School Growth and Development
- develop an understanding of the concept of a Professional Learning Community
- develop an understanding of how Professional Learning Community looks in a school setting.
- develop an understanding of the role of the leader in a professional learning community.
- develop an understanding of the role of the school leader as part of the district leadership team.
Session 4: Student Support Services
The prospective leader will:- develop an understanding of the concept of inclusion.
- develop an understanding of the impact of inclusion in a school setting.
- become familiar with documentation/legislation related to special education.
- develop an understanding of the responsibility to accommodate every student.
- become familiar with the ISSP process and teacher responsibility.
- become familiar with Child Welfare Act and teacher responsibility.
- develop an understanding of the role of Special Education Teachers.
- develop an understanding of the role of the Guidance Counselor.
Session 5: Professional Learning Communities
The prospective leader will:- develop an understanding of the concept of Professional learning Communities
- develop an understanding of the application of the concepts in the Eastern School District
- develop and understanding of the role of the administrator in supporting the Professional Learning Community model
- become aware of some of the barriers to implementing this model and develop strategies to overcome them
- Develop an understanding of what lies in the knowing doing gap as it relates to developing Professional Learning Communities
Session 6: Managing Conflict
The prospective leader will:- develop an understanding of conflict
- develop an understanding of conflict management
- develop skills in dealing with difficult parents
- develop skills used in diffusing volatile situations
Session 8: Legal Issues, Student Behavior and Discipline
The prospective leader will:- develop an understanding of the legal framework that governs education.
- appreciate the increasingly litigious nature of school administration.
- develop an understanding of negligence and liability related to school administration.
- become familiar with documentation related to student discipline.
- understand the legislated authority governing the suspension of students.
- develop an understanding of the District "Student Behavior and Discipline" Policy.
- develop an understanding of progressive discipline.
- be introduced to the concept of co-operative discipline.
- understand the procedures regarding discipline/suspension of students.
- become familiar with proactive initiatives influencing a safe and caring learning environment
- become familiar with the District's "Safe and Caring Schools Policy.
Session 9: Operations/Communications/Management Skills
The prospective leader will:- appreciate the variety and complexity of ongoing operations and routines
- develop time management skills
- be introduced to the Win-school Administration Program
- develop an understanding of scheduling
- develop an understanding of the importance of Emergency Plans (Fire Drills, Evacuation, Critical Incidents)
- develop an understanding of the process of managing Attendance (Student, Staff)
- develop an understanding of Department of Education data entry.
- develop an understanding of how to run an effective meeting
Session 10: School Financial Management
The prospective leader will:- understand the concept of school budgeting
- understand the management and accounting of School Board funds
- understand the management and accounting procedures for the receipt and disbursement of school-based funds
- gain a basic understanding of the SDS system
- understand Eastern School District policies related to purchasing
- understand Eastern School District policies related to accounting for school-based funds
