St. Kevin's High School officially opened its doors to students for the first time in 1913. At the time the school consisted of only one room, serving grades one to eleven, and housing 32 scholars from 1913 to the late 1940s, St. Kevin’s was a parochial school, meaning the school was staffed by lay teachers. By the early 1960s, the main concern in the school was the need for space. In 1963, what is now the older elementary school was opened to the public. A two-storey section was added in 1971 and provided two more classrooms. As the years went by, St. Kevin’s began to expand by increasing its staff and extracurricular activities. As a result, St. Kevin’s evolved into a new era of education. It all started when the present day St. Kevin’s Junior High was opened on January 5, 1981. It provided 20 new classrooms as well as a library, gymnasium and cafeteria. By this time the population of St. Kevin’s had grown to 862. In 1990, the residents of Goulds, Petty Harbour and Maddox Cove received a new high school on the Back Line. St. Kevin’s currently has 383 students from grades 10-12.
Although it may be small in number the school still has many activities for students to participate in, such as: sports art, theatre arts, music and peer counseling programs. St. Kevin’s is looking forward to many more good years of education as it heads towards its 100th anniversary. The school’s motto is “Quad Tenete Verum Est’, which means ‘Grasp What is True’. |
