Lake Academy is located on the southern tip of the Burin Peninsula in the town of Fortune, Newfoundland, and serves the kindergarten to seventh grade student population (approx 300 students in total) of Fortune, Grand Bank, and Grand Beach. We are part of the Eastern School District. The school itself was opened in September, 1997. At present, our school has fifteen classrooms; three special needs classrooms; a challenging needs classroom; a learning resources centre; a science lab; a technology lab; a music room; a gymnasium; a guidance office; a nurse's office; and a cafeteria. All instructional areas in our school are fully networked and contain an IBM compatible computer. Our Learning Resources Centre houses six IBM compatible computers used primarily for resource-based learning, utilizing the ATHENA electronic card catalogue system. We also have a fully functional computer lab consisting of twenty-nine IBM compatible computers. Our school also has wireless capability. Our school offers the provincially prescribed curriculum as per the provincial Department of Education's Program of Studies. The curriculum is based on an Atlantic common core of outcomes that articulates what students are expected to know and be able to do at each grade level. , We offer a variety of curricular, co-curricular and extra-curricular activities, including primary and elementary choirs, a band program, a guitar group, a drama troupe, an after school art program, and lunch time sports program. We think of our school as a comprehensive place where students come to learn. Our school motto "A Great Place to Learn" incorporates what we believe is an atmosphere that is a positive, stimulating, and rewarding learning environment for children.
