Bishop Abraham, which opened in 1965 as a Junior High School, presently provides programming for students in Grades K-6, English stream only. The current population is 177 students with approximately 19 teaching staff, 5 student assistants, 4 support staff, and a designated Child Youth Family Services worker.
Bishop Abraham is a neighborhood school using bussing only for Special Needs students. Our school zone ranges from Cashin Avenue (in the west) to Franklin Avenue (in the east). We provide lunch through the School Lunch Association and students can avail of the Breakfast Club twice weekly at the Buckmaster's Community Center.
We strive to provide a variety of extracurricular ranging from drama, intramurals, Friendship Club, Chess Club and guitar group. The school works closely with neighbouring high schools to provide Tutors For Tuition program. We have active School Council and a supportive parent population. For the past number of years the school community has been privileged to partner with the St. John's East Rotary as part of their Adopt-a-School Initiative, a project that has been mutually awarding. The school has been very active in partnering with Big Brothers, Big Sisters for students who face many challenges. For the past three years, the school has also partnered with Air Canada in the Dreams Take Flight program, and with Tim Horton's summer camp opportunities.
