- Grade 4 Social Studies enables students to "explore" the concept and nature of exploration. Through active learning, students examine the stories of various explorers and analyze factors which motivated exploration. They also evaluate the impact of exploration over time. Students apply the concept of exploration to the world through an examination of the relationship between humans and the physical environment. The curriculum engages students to explore the physical, human and political landscapes of Canada and examine the symbols associated with Canada's landscapes.
- Visual Art: Grade 5
Art education at the grade 5 level is intended to be experiential and open-ended to permit the greatest flexibility to the student. The curriculum is designed to cultivate a love of art and sensitivity to the visual environment. It is designed to foster confidence in expression and develop basic skills in art making techniques and processes. The relationship between seeing and feeling is emphasized and an atmosphere in which visual creation is an everyday mode of expression is promoted. The elementary Art curriculum is structured around the following organizers:
- Creating, Making, and Presenting (Create)
- Understanding and Connecting Contexts of Time, Place, and Community (Contextualize)
- Perceiving, Reflecting, and Responding (Reflect)
- Grade 6 Mathematics curriculum promotes active exploration of a variety of mathematical ideas in the context of meaningful learning experiences. Students will work with place value, factors and multiples, improper fractions and mixed numbers, ratio and percent, integers, multiplication and division of decimals, and order of operations. They will explore patterns and relations in graphs and tables. There is a focus on number relationships in equations with letter variables and developing an understanding of preservation of equality. Work with measurement, 3D objects and 2D shapes, and transformations all provide opportunities to develop students' sense of shape and space. Students will select, justify and use various data collection methods, graph collected data and analyze the graph to solve problems, and develop an understanding of experimental and theoretical probability.
- Grades 2, 5 and 8 Mathematics Program
The 2009-2010 school year marks the second year of the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador's three-year plan of new program implementation for mathematics. This year's implementation is scheduled for Grades 2, 5 and 8. Similar to the programs previously implemented for Grades K, 1, 4 and 7 last year, the new Grade 2 , 5 and 8 mathematics programs are modeled after a conceptual framework based on the Western and Northern Canadian Protocol (WNCP). - Grade 4 Art
The Grade 4 Art curriculum is an extension of the Grade 2/3 Art Curriculum which was implemented last year. The curriculum is designed to cultivate a love of art and sensitivity to the visual environment. The elements of design and principles of design are explored as key elements to visual communication. Students draw upon personal experience as the basis for visual expression.
2008-09 Program Implementations (Elementary)
- Mathematics (Grade 4)
In September 2008, new mathematics curriculum is being implemented in Grade 4. Implementation will follow in September 2009 in Grade 5 and Grade 6 in 2010. This new curriculum has been adopted from the Western and Northern Canadian Protocol's (WNCP) common curriculum framework for K-9 mathematics. New textbooks and resources accompany the new program and professional development for teachers will continue as the program is implemented. The learning outcomes in the program are organized into four strands across the grades K - 9. The strands include Number, Patterns and Relations, Shape and Space, and Statistics and Probability. In addition to the strands, the philosophy of the program identifies seven interrelated mathematical processes that children need to be engaged in to develop deep mathematical understanding. These include: communication, connections, mental mathematics and estimation, problem solving, reasoning, technology and visualization.
- French Immersion Program - Français 4 à 6
This is a literacy program designed for students enrolled in the early French immersion program in grades 4 to 6. This program is a continuation of the literacy program implemented at the early French immersion primary level and includes the following four components: Appreciation of the French Language and Cultural Diversity, Listening and Speaking, Reading and Viewing and Writing and Representation. The first component focusses specifically on attitudes toward French, French culture and cultural diversity. The other three components deal with communication. All components are interrelated and together form the backdrop of the French immersion program.
