Holy Trinity High's Environment Group Wins National Video Award

August 24, 2010

The Friends of the Gully group of Holy Trinity High School in Torbay has won yet another prestigious award. Michael Gardiner, Jason Pynn, Charlene McCarthy and Dylan D'Croix have spent endless hours on scripting, taping and editing an environmental issue close to home. Through ECO Canada's first annual video contest, Holy Trinity High was one in four Canadian schools who have been awarded $2,000 for their video submission. The winning video can be viewed online at: www.youtube.com/ecocanada.

The school's fundraising efforts over the past two years have helped continue the goal of greening the school's grounds. The group has established a beautiful garden containing native species of trees and a sitting area where teachers, students and parents can admire the beautiful community. This area is a special place for everyone at the school, as the area has been designated as a tribute to the late Mr. Mike Dinn.

St. Peter's Elementary Receives Peaceful Schools International Designation

August 24, 2010

On May, 13, St. Peter's Elementary celebrated its membership with Peaceful Schools International.  One of the goals of St. Peter's Elementary is to promote a safe and caring school community which nurtures the development of the whole child.  The school's Safe and Caring Team had established a number of objectives over the past three years including bullying programs, peer mediation, the Roots of Empathy Program and the development of the "St. Peter's Way" which teaches students how to show respect for themselves and others.  All of these initiatives led to the school's status as a peaceful school.

Peace Day was an impressive success with the RNC horses bringing in the Peace Flag and the Friendship Centre Drummers entertaining the children in the gym complete with dazzling peace bracelets and class peace treaties.
