The Harbour Grace Dance Stars started in October, and have been working hard all year. Particularly, since January they have been preparing a routine for Stand Up to Bullying week, and wowed the crowd of students when one by one they started standing up to dance against bullying. The students have been rehearsing stretching, jazz, hip hop, and cheerleading techniques which they displayed during their performance. We cannot wait to see what they do next!

Over the past several years Goulds Elementary has placed much emphasis on promoting a safe and caring learning environment for all members of the school community. Our Positive Behaviour Supports initiative has been very successful in focusing on and increasing positive behaviours. To acknowledge the progress and wonderful spirit of Goulds Elementary, we held a Celebrating Our Spirit Week which included several exciting school-wide activities. The week began with a school-wide "Friendship and Bullying Awareness" assembly. Using our very own True Colours video, each student was involved in presenting a message about not being alone and being proud of individuality. To prepare for the assembly, every class read and discussed the poem The Crayon Box that Talked and all 630 students chose a crayon colour that they most identified with and explained why they felt that connection. These "crayons" were then displayed in large "crayon boxes" on a school wall with the message, "We are a box of crayons, each one of us unique, but when we get together, the picture is complete" written above it.

On March 23rd, students in grades 9-12 in the NorthEast Avalon region participated in the Canadian Parents for French Concours d'Art Oratoire (Speak Off). Students spoke passionately about current topics while speaking in their second language. Students who earned 1st and 2nd place in each category will be moving on to the Provincial competition in St John's April 27th. Once again, Gonzaga High School took the honour of being the school with the most participants, filling eight of nine categories for the event. The Grade 8 Girls of Holy Trinity Junior High Tigers have gone undefeated for two consecutive years in their volleyball division. Their wins this year include gold medals at: Volleyfest; the Eastern School District championship; Afterschool League; U-14 Regionals; U-14 Provincials; and, three Invitational tournament championships. They also took Silver at the U-15 Regionals.

These girls have displayed excellent sportsmanship throughout the year and continue to be model students in the classroom. Way to go girls.
