K-3 Math Day at Dunne Memorial Academy

May 16, 2012

On February 23, 2012 Dunne Memorial Academy held their very first Math Day for kindergarten to grade three students. The students invited their parents to join them in an afternoon of Math games in the gym. Each child and parent sat at a table and played a game that was created for their grade level. After 10 minutes, each pair of players switched tables and played a new game. Games were developed for numbers, patterns, measurement, addition/subtraction and geometry. All of the primary students were familiar with the games and actually taught their parents how to play. There was also an area for students to estimate the number of jellybeans in a jar using a referent of 10 or 100 to make a reasonable estimate. The grade 2/3 students and parents played an Addition Loop Game to start off the afternoon as well.

This was an excellent opportunity for parents to explore the primary Math program with their children. They were able to see how various games are created and used in the classroom to reinforce math concepts. The parents thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon and the students absolutely loved playing these games with them.

Project C.P.R. at Booth Memorial High School

May 16, 2012

On March 14, 2012 the entire school community of Booth Memorial participated in Project C.P.R. and walked away with an employability skill and knowledge that may one day save a life. Six hundred students in Grades 9 to Level III spent a morning receiving hands-on C.P.R. and A.E.D. responder training. The school partnered with 26 trainers from the Lifesaving Society and Thrive - CYN who provided funding for Project C.P.R.

Project C.P.R. was spearheaded by Cody Dunne, a 2010 Booth Memorial graduate and Instructor Trainer with the Lifesaving Society. Cody believes that C.P.R. training is a skill that everyone should have and his connection with Booth made the school the right fit for a pilot project. Principal Gail Zwicker agrees, "This was a tremendous opportunity for our students. The skills students learned here will make them more employable and go a long way in helping students help others."

With financial support from Steers Insurance, Branch 2 of the Newfoundland and Labrador Nurses Union and private donations, Booth will be purchasing an automated external defibrillator for the school.
